Story
Babel is composed of four different stories, linked by one common thread. The film begins with a mourning couple Richard (Brad Pitt) and Susan (Cate Blanchett) from San Diego, USA who are in Morocco, trying to overcome the loss of their child. Their other two children are back home under the care of their Mexican nanny Amelia (Adriana Barraza).
While the couple travel on a tour bus, two sons (Said Tarachani and Boubkar Ait El Caid) of a local herdsman, Hassan, get their hands on a rifle. While testing the rifle, they take a shot at the tour bus. The bullet hits Susan in the shoulder, almost killing her.
Richard calls home to inform Amelia of the situation and the delay it would cause in their return. Amelia, who has to urgently attend her child's wedding, immediately departs for Mexico, taking the children along.
Meanwhile, the Moroccan police trace the rifle to Hassan. Hassan explains that it was handed to him by Abdullah who had received it from a Japanese man.
In Mexico, Amelia, who has illegally crossed the border with the hapless children, meets with the harsh immigration policies of the Bush administration.
As the rifle is traced back in Japan, Babel weaves in another story. Chieko Wataya (Rinko Kikuchi) is a deaf Japanese girl whose widowed father unsuccessfully attempts to communicate with her. Lacking love and intimacy in life, a sexually rebellious Chieko tries to fulfill her desire for acceptance, physically, albeit unsuccessfully.
The film's title Babel is symbolic of the confusion in human communication caused by the wrath of God as the Babylonians attempted to build the Tower of Babel to reach heaven and proclaim the glory of man. Babel revolves around a similar discord arising because of the cultural, lingual and class barriers in a discordant world.
