Once while Lord Shiva was away, Parvathi asks Nandi to stand guard while she bathed. To her horror, she found Shiva walking in. She realized that none of the Ganas could stand up to her husband Shiva and decided to create a Gana which exclusively for her.
She creates a beautiful young boy from the sandal paste applied on her body and names him Ganesha. She asks him to stand guard and not allow any one in while she bathed.
Lord Shiva returns and is upset at being stopped by an adamant Ganesha. Shiva first sends his ganas to talk to Ganesha. Ganesha annihilates them all.
Lord Brahma offers to intervene. Ganesha stands his ground. A battle between Ganesha on one side and the Gods and Ganas led by Lord Indra on the other side ensues. Ganesha manages to trounce his opponents.
Enraged, Lord Shiva beheads Ganesha. Parvathi is extremely upset and inconsolable. To stop the bloodshed, Narada pacifies Parvathi. Parvathi insists on her son being revived.
Using mantras the Devas revive Ganesha. Parvathi is thrilled and blesses her son. Lord Shiva accepts him as his son and calls him Vignesha.
