Story

 

Based on a novel by Winifred Watson, Miss Pettegrew Lives for a Day revolves around an unattractive governess Miss Guinevere Pettegrew (Frances McDormand), who is fired from her job.


Luck isn't on her side as Guinevere loses her belongings in an unfortunate mishap. To top it all, she is on the verge of being turned away by the employment agency. A desperate Miss Pettegrew grabs at her only option - a job as a social secretary to an aspiring American actress and singer Delysia Lafosse (Amy Adams).


Delysia needs a secretary who would aid her juggle three beaus. All the three are equally important to her as they are likely to give her career a boost. The men include a nightclub owner (Mark Strong), a son of a theater producer (Tom Payne), and a piano player (Lee Pace).


Miss Pettigrew finds herself swept up into the high society life as soon as she is hired. As she helps Delysia balance her complicated love life and career, which lie in the hands of her three lovers, the ex-governess finds meaning to her new found role and her life.
