Story

 

What does an artist do when he has passed his prime? Probably just fade into oblivion. Alex Fletcher (Hugh Grant), a former 80's pop idol, however, is still trying to redeem himself even though he has become a pessimist. He lives a comfortable life doing reunion gigs, but his satisfaction with life decreases with each passing day.

When he gets a chance to write and record a song for reigning pop diva Cora Corman (Haley Bennett), Alex takes it up. The problem is, Alex is a genius when it comes to melody but his lyrics are pathetic. He finds a solution in Sophie Fisher (Drew Barrymore), who is filling in for a friend to water Alex's plants. Sophie is a very good poet. Alex convinces her to write a song for him so that he can have, probably, his last shot at fame.

Alex and Sophie start working on the song, spending more time with each other. As they struggle together, there grows a deeper understanding for each other. Is love on the horizon?
