myPOPKORN's Review
Rating: Two and a half stars out of Five
Debutant director Paritossh Painter makes a valiant effort to come up with a funny caper, but succeeds only in parts. Paying Guests begins on a not so serious note, and the first half of the film fails to impress.
It is only during the second half that things liven up with a number of hilarious situations and dialogues. Unfortunately, the script is unable to maintain its tempo and soon lapses into forced situations which do not gel well enough to make you roll in the isles.
The climax, instead of taking the fun to the next level, falls flat.
The performances are also not very impressive. Chunky Pandey is not funny at all with his speech defect act, being hardly intelligible in places, while Paintal too fails to deliver. The scene where Asrani turns up while the boys are bitching about him seems forced, as do several other predictable scenes.
While the girls Riya Sen, Celina Jaitly, Neha Dhupia and Sayali Bhagat are wasted, it is Delnaz Paul and Johnny Lever who walk away with all the funny lines, along with Javed Jaffrey and Shreyas Talpade.
The puns and play on words are witty and do make you laugh in places, but the pace at which these are piled on to each other might not give the audience time to react.
All in all, a good effort by Painter, but he is let down by the script. Paying Guests looks more like a collection of funny jokes at the end of the day.
