Lata Mangeshkar used to follow the singing style of celebrated singer Noor Jehan initially but developed her own style later. She even hired an Urdu tutor to perfect her diction.

Artist Biography 

Lata Mangeshkar, Bollywood's most popular playback singer, has been singing for over 50 years. She has lent her voice to actresses ranging from Nargis to present day sensation Preity Zinta.

Lata began her singing lessons at the tender age of five, under renowned singers Ustad Aman Ali Khan Sahib and Ustad Amanat Khan. She made her debut as a playback singer in the Marathi film Kiti Hasaal (1942), but the song was edited out later.

It was with composer Ghulam Haider that her voice first resonated on the silver screen in the film Majboor (1948). In 1949, four of her films -- Mahal, Dulari, Barsaat and Andaz -- were released and Lata became a name to reckon with.

Though Lata sang for most the popular music directors, it was with composers C Ramchandra and Madan Mohan that her voice scaled new heights. The 1960s and 1970s saw Lata at the height of her popularity, even as controversy plagued her with accusations of monopolizing the playback-singing industry. In the 1980s, however, she cut down her playback work to concentrate on her shows abroad.

Lata continued to render her sweet voice to young actresses like Kajol in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Madhuri Dixit in Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), and Preity Zinta in Veer-Zaara (2004).
