Mukesh was known as the voice of legendary Bollywood actor and director Raj Kapoor during the 1950s and 1960s.

Artist Biography

Mukesh, one of the greatest male playback singers of Hindi film industry, was known for his haunting and melancholic voice. Born on July 22, 1923 in a small middle-class family, Mukesh was groomed by the noted singer Pandit Jagannath Prasad.

Before becoming a playback singer, Mukesh tried his hand at acting too, however, his first film Nirdosh (1941), failed at the box-office. His first break as a singer came with Pehali Nazar (1945). Though initially, Mukesh seemed to be imitating K L Saigal, with Andaz (1949) Mukesh had evolved his own style.

Some of Mukesh's hit songs were from the movies Aag (1948), Awaara (1951) and Shree 420 (1955). Encouraged by his success as a singer, Mukesh tried his hand in acting for a second time. He featured in two films; Mashooka (1953) and Anuraag (1956). Unfortunately, both the movies sank at the box-office.

Mukesh suffered a severe financial blow due to the set-backs he suffered. Fortunately, he bounced back with Yehudi (1958), Madhumati (1958) and Parvarish (1958). Mukesh kept his tryst with success with Anaadi (1959), Sangam (1964), Mera Naam Joker (1970) and Dharam Karam (1975).

On August 27, 1976, while on a concert tour in the USA, Mukesh suffered a fatal heart attack. Several of his songs were released posthumously. Mukesh last sang for the film Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978).

Lyrics

jis galee mein teraa ghar naa ho baalamaa
us galee se humei to gujaranaa nahee
jo dagar tere dwaare pe jaatee naa ho
us dagar pe humei paanw rakhanaa nahee

jindagee mein kaee rangaraliyaa sahee
har taraf muskuraatee ye kaliyaan sahee
khubasoorat bahaaron kee galiyaan sahee
jis chaman mein tere pag mein kaante chubhe
us chaman se humei fool chunanaa nahee

haa ye rasme, ye kasamei sabhee tod ke
too chalee aa, chunar pyaar kee odh ke
yaa chalaa jaaoongaa main ye jag chhod ke
jis jagah yaad teree sataane lagee
us jagah yek pal bhee thhaharanaa nahee
