Artist Biography

Lata Mangeshkar, Bollywood's most popular playback singer, has rendered her voice for over 50 years for legendary actresses of Indian Cinema like Nargis to Bollywood's heart throb like Preity Zinta.

Lata began her singing lessons at the tender age of five, under renowned singers ustad Aman Ali Khan Sahib and ustad Amanat Khan. She made her debut as a playback singer in the Marathi film Kiti Hasaal (1942), but the song was edited out in the final film.

It was with composer Ghulam Haider that her voice first resonated on the silver screen in the film Majboor (1948). In 1949, four of her films - Mahal, Dulari, Barsaat, and Andaz - were released and Lata had become a name to reckon with.

Though her songs were assured hits under any composer, it was the composers C Ramchandra and Madan Mohan who gave her voice challenges that no one else did. The 1960s and 1970s saw Lata at the height of popularity and success, even as she was accused of dominating the playback-singing industry. In the 1980s, however, she cut down her playback work to concentrate on her shows abroad.

Lata continued to render her sweet voice to young actresses like Kajol in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Madhuri Dixit in Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), and Preity Zinta in Veer-Zaara (2004).
