55 Percent Vote in Second Phase of Lok Sabha Elections

Apr 23, 2009:Around 55 percent voters exercised their franchise for the 140 Lok Sabha seats in the second phase of polling on Thursday.


Twelve states across the country went to polls in the second phase today.

Maximum voting percentage was recorded in Andhra Pradesh (68 percent), followed by Maharashtra (56 percent).

Orissa and Karnataka registered 55 percent voting, Jharkhand 47 percent, Jammu and Kashmir 46 percent and Bihar and Uttar Pradesh 44 percent each.

 

Minor incidents of naxal violence were reported from some areas of Jharkhand.

 

While in Bihar polling started late as the electronic voting machines reached behind schedule.

 

Severe heat wave also affected polling in some parts of Orissa, where pace of voting slowed down in afternoon.

 

Prominent candidates, in fray, include NCP supremo Sharad Pawar from Madha, Ram Vilas Paswan of LJP from Hajipur, Rahul Gandhi of Congress from Amethi and Kamalnath of Congress from Chhindwara.



 

Background

Lok Sabha Elections 2009 would be held in five phases on April 16, April 23, April 30, May 7 and May 13.

The poll results will be declared on May 16.
