B R Chopra's Death Mourned by Bollywood

Nov 6, 2008 Thu (1630 hrs) Legendary filmmaker Baldev Raj Chopra, who died following prolonged illness at his residence in Mumbai on Wednesday was a film maker par excellence.

Chopra was known for directing and producing films based on socially relevant issue.

Considered as doyen of Hindi cinema, he is credited with giving classics like Naya Daur (1957), Sadhana (1958), Dhool Ka Phool (1959), Gumrah (1963), Waqt (1965), Humraz (1967), Dastaan (1972), Insaaf Ka Tarazu (1980) and Nikaah (1982).

He also had acted in a movie Ghar (1978) and written stories for films Baghban (2003) and Babul (2006).

Besides, the filmmaking, Chopra produced one of the most popular television serial, Mahabharat.

Chopra bagged several awards for his contribution to the field of cinema including honors like Phalke Ratna Award by the Dadasaheb Phalke Academy (2008), Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award (2003), Dādāsāheb Phalke Award (1998) and Filmfare Best Director Award for the movie, Kānoon (1960).

He is survived by director son Ravi Chopra and two daughters Sashi and Neena.

B R Chopra: Early Life

Born on April 22, 1914 in Ludhiana, Baldev Raj Chopra, popularly known as B R, bagged a Master's degree in English literature from Lahore University.

He worked as a film journalist with monthly Cine Herald. But his stint as a journalist did not last long as the violence before partition that saw his residence in Lahore being burnt down compelled him to shift to Delhi.

Chopra, however, did not stay for long in Delhi and moved to Mumbai to pursue his dream of filmmaking.

In 1949, he directed his first film Karwat, but went unnoticed.

B R Chopra, however, did not take it long to succeed in the uncertain world of cinema with a super hit film Afsana (1951) in his second attempt as a director.

Chopra floated B R Chopra films production house in 1955. The production house's first film Naya Daur proved to be a milestone in the history of Hindi films.
