August 28 (1630 hrs)Â The Bombay High Court on Thursday slammed the Maharashtra government over the deadline issued by the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray to shop owners, asking them to put up Marathi signboards. Â
The High Court was hearing a petition filed by Retail Shopkeepers Association in the year 2000 challenging the amendments to the Bombay Shop and Establishment Act.
The High Court observed that when the matter is subjudice, how come political leaders like MNS chief Raj Thackeray set a deadline to the shopkeepers to use Marathi signboards.
The HC also asked the state government to explain steps it has taken to ensure maintenance of law and order.
Retail Shopkeepers Association challenged the amendments to the Bombay Shop and Establishment Act, which made it compulsory for any shop owner to put up signboards in Marathi.
The petitioners contended that the amendment was a violation of their fundamental rights.
