May 30, 2009: Fifteenth Lok Sabha could witness history as Congress is thinking of fielding either GirjaVyas or Meira Kumar as its candidate for Speaker's position.

The candidature is just formal as the ruling party candidate for Speaker's post obviously wins.

Meira Kumar, a Lok Sabha MP from Sasaram constituency, belongs to the Indian Foreign Services (IFS).

She served as a member in the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in the 14th Lok Sabha, besides holding other important posts.

Girja Vyas is a Lok Sabha MP from Chittorgarh constituency. She was made the Chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW) in 2005.

After Congress made Pratibha Patil India's first President, this may be another historic moment for Indian democracy.

Background

Congress Party, which is also known as the Indian National Congress, is India's oldest party founded in 1885.

Dadabhai Naoroji, Surendranath Banerjee and Allan Octavian Hume are some of its founders.

The Indian National Congress spearheaded the Indian independence struggle, which was against the British rule in India.

After independence in 1947, it became one of India's most prominent political parties.

It also leads the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) coalition.
