March 4, 2009: Ending speculations over their alliance for the coming general elections, Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Wednesday decided to contest the polls together in Maharashtra.
According to the agreement, Congress would contest elections on 25 seats, while Sharad Pawar-led NCP will fight polls from 23 constituencies.
Earlier, NCP threatened Congress of joining hands with Shiv Sena if it was not ceded 24 seats in the state for the elections getting underway on April 16.
The growing closeness between leaders of Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena and the NCP in last few days had also left major NDA party BJP worried.
Congress and its allies formed the UPA government after the General Elections in 2004. Senior Congress leader Manmohan Singh was then appointed the Prime Minister after Congress chief Sonia Gandhi refused to accept the post.
