Dec 31, 2008 (1500 hrs) Indian cricket skipper M S Dhoni received two threatening letters in a gap of three days after which his security has been upgraded to Z-category by the Jharkhand government.
The first letter received by Dhoni on Monday (December 29) demanded an extortion amount of Rs 50 lakh from the cricketer. It further threatened that if the demand was not met the cricketer's family would have to face dire consequences.
Presently 45 security personnel are guarding the Indian skipper.
Police confirmed Dhoni's family received the letter on Monday and it was initially suspected that it was sent by one Taslim, henchman of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.
Meanwhile, police are trying to trace the person who has sent the letter.
Police also suspect this to be a handiwork of a local gang led by one Surinder Bengali.
Dhoni had previously applied for a license of a 9 mm pistol that is yet pending.
Dhoni on Wednesday (December 31) received a second threat letter that warned him not to take the threat lightly.
The letter warned the family not to involve police else their house would be blown up.
Nov 22, 2008 Sat (1500 hrs) Indian cricket team skipper M S Dhoni has reportedly threatened to resign from the captaincy following R P Singh's omission from the ODI squad for the fourth and fifth match of the ongoing series against England.
Dhoni had a disagreement with the selection committee members during the meet on November 20 to choose team for the two games, according to reports which quoted an unnamed selector as saying.
The wicketkeeper-batsman was unhappy that the committee decided to replace R P Singh with Irfan Pathan and offered to quit, the reports said further.
BCCI secretary N Srinivisan, however, rubbished the reports saying he could not respond to something that was being floated around by somebody.
