Mar 16, 2009: The Election Commission has asked Bihar chief secretary to respond within three days to its notice on election code of conduct violation by senior police officers.
The state electoral office served notice for poll code violation by DGP D M Gautam and IG (Administration) Neelmani after the duo participated in Holi celebrations of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
Though both the officers maintained that they were at the chief minister's residence with some official work, the election commission is not ready to buy this defense and has asked the chief secretary to file a report within three days elaborating the facts.
With Lok Sabha elections announced on March 2, the model code of conduct came into force the same day and the election commission is keeping a tab on activities of politicians and government officers for alleged poll code violation.
Congress and its allies formed the UPA government after the General Elections in 2004. Senior Congress leader Manmohan Singh was then appointed the Prime Minister after Congress chief Sonia Gandhi refused to accept the post.
