September 9 (1200 hrs) Actor-turned-politician Jaya Bachchan on Tuesday apologized for alleged anti-Marathi remarks, saying she regretted hurting the sentiments of Maharashtrians.

Asserting that she did not intend to insult Maharashtra as the state has given her a lot; the Rajya Sabha member accused the media of misquoting her.

During a promotional event of an upcoming flick Drona in Mumbai last week,
Jaya Bachchan said people belonging to Uttar Pradesh should speak Hindi.

Jaya Bachchan's statement triggered controversy, with Maharashtra Navanirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray, Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP criticizing her for her remarks. Thackeray even directed his followers to prevent screening of movies featuring Bachchan family members in the state.

Bachchan's and MNS have been at the loggerheads for quite sometime now.

MNS had questioned the loyalties of Bachchan family towards Maharashtra after the latter constructed a girls school in the name of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in Barabanki (Uttar Pradesh).

Amitabh Bachchan was the Brand Ambassador of his native state Uttar Pradesh when Mulayam Singh was the Chief Minister.
