Kalyan Court Grants Bail to MNS Chief Raj Thackeray

Jun 29, 2009: Kalyan Court on Monday granted bail to MNS chief Raj Thackeray on a personal bond of Rs one lakh in October 19 attack on north Indians case.

The court warned Raj of cancelling the bail if he or his party members indulged in any act of violence.

It also directed MNS chief to refrain from making inflammatory statements.

Raj was charged in connection with attack on the students, who had come to Mumbai to appear for railway recruitment exams and damaging railway property.

The sections imposed on him were 423 (dishonest or fraudulent execution of deed), 427 (mischief causing damage) and 506 (2) (criminal intimidation).

The Bombay High Court on June 16 set aside bail given to the MNS chief and ordered him to surrender by June 29.



 

Background

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray was arrested in wee hours on October 21 from Ratnagiri in connection with attack on north Indian students.

He was charged with inciting violence, rioting, assault and damage to property.

Later, Kalyan Court granted bail to MNS chief in the case.

The Kalyan Court’s decision was challenged in the High Court by the state government.
