Lok Sabha Elections: First Phase of Campaigning Ends

Apr 14, 2009: Campaigning for first phase of Lok Sabha elections, to be held on April 16 across 17 states for 124 seats, would end on Tuesday.

 

The states that would go for polls in the first phase are Arunachal Pradesh for 22 seats, 16 seats in Uttar Pradesh, 13 in Bihar, 13 in Maharashtra and 10 seats in Orissa.

 

Also six seats in Jharkhand, 20 seats in Kerala, 11 in Chhattisgarh, three in Assam, two in Meghalaya, and two in Arunachal Pradesh would see voting in first phase.

 

Apart from the above mentioned states, polls would also be held on one seat in each state of Jammu and Kashmir, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep.

 

Around 714 million voters are likely to cast their votes in polls for 15th Lok Sabha.

 

Counting of votes will be done on May 16 after voting in all phases is over.



 

Background

Congress and its allies formed the UPA government after the General Elections in 2004. Senior Congress leader Manmohan Singh was then appointed the Prime Minister after Congress chief Sonia Gandhi refused to accept the post.

Comment: The time has come to say good-bye---bye-bye-bye..... to the
politics of deception in 21st century to enable people of
India to interact and compete with the modern world.The
present leadership irrespective of any party in the country
is not in postion to cop-up in the modern age with the
intellect, they possess, though the presence of exceptions
like Dr Manmohan Singh, a modern philosopher King of Plato
and men out of young generation could not be ruled out.
