May 15, 2009: Former Speaker Somnath Chatterjee said on Friday that Left parties may support the Congress to enable it form the new government at Centre.

 

He stated that since Left Front cannot form a government, it is better that they support to Congress and keep out the communal party of BJP out of power.

 

When asked if it was political opportunism, Chatterjee said this was the only way out for the Left to keep parties playing communal card out.

 

He also added that he was merely stating the Left view.

Background

Lok Sabha Elections 2009 would be held in five phases on April 16, April 23, April 30, May 7 and May 13.

The poll results will be declared on May 16.
