Vienna Gurudwara Shootout: Delhi-Lahore Bus Halted after Protests in Punjab

May 25, 2009: The Delhi-Lahore bus was halted in Ludhiana on Monday after violence erupted in various parts of Punjab to protest the shootout at a Gurudwara in Vienna.

An angry mob torched buses and an ATM centre in Jalandhar after which curfew was imposed in parts of the town. The army conducted flag march in sensitive pockets of the state.

Protestors also attacked the Jammu Tawi-Kanyakumari express train affecting the movement of railways.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh asked people to maintain peace and refrain from indulging in violence.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has called an all party meet on Tuesday to discuss the situation following violent protests in the state.

Thirty people were injured when two groups fired at each other in a Gurudwara in the Austrian capital of Vienna on Sunday.



 

Background

Earlier on March 17, in a suspected racial attack, a Gurdwara in London was gutted in fire and many priceless books were destroyed.

The fire broke out mysteriously after which a criminal investigation was launched by the London Police.
