Vienna Gurudwara Shootout: P Chidambaram Slams Punjab Government

May 25, 2009: Union Home Minister P Chidambaram slammed the Punjab state government for what he called its lax attitude in imposing curfew in Punjab following violence to protest the shootout at a Gurudwara in Vienna.

 

He said that in spite of the curfew being imposed in various parts of Punjab mischievous elements could be seen roaming in towns like Jalandhar damaging public property and indulging in violence.

 

Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna expressed his sadness over the incident in Vienna.

 

He said that his ministry was in touch with Austrian authorities and was trying to see that the guilty would be brought to justice quickly.



 

Background

Earlier on March 17, in a suspected racial attack, a Gurdwara in London was gutted in fire and many priceless books were destroyed.

The fire broke out mysteriously after which a criminal investigation was launched by the London Police.
