King Bharat returns to his royal capital, Hastinapur. He has returned after invading and making several territories a part of his kingdom.
After his return, he sees his subjects looking up to him to choose his successor. King Bharat assures them that he will be choosing a successor to his throne shortly. But he is very confused about whom to choose for the position. Even though he has nine sons, he does not see any of them fit to become a king.
After much thought, King Bharat makes a commoner, but someone who possesses all the qualities to become a king, his successor. This greatly shocks his mother, Queen Shakuntala, and all his subjects. But he tells his mother that he needs to do that to fulfill his duties as a king.
After several generations, Shantanu becomes the king of Hastinapur. One day he is hunting where he meets Ganga and mesmerized by her beauty, instantly falls in love with her.
Produced by B R Chopra and directed by his son Ravi Chopra, the television series Mahabharat met with great success when it was telecast on Doordarshan from 1988 to 1990.
The series consisted of 94 episodes of 45 minutes each and left the audience captivated. Most actors in the series like Nitish Bharadwaj (Shri Krishna), Mukesh Khanna (Bhishma Pitamaha) and Roopa Ganguly (Draupadi) among others attained iconic status.
Mahabharat is inspired from the great epic Mahabharat, one of the most important texts of India. It discusses the human goals of purpose, pleasure, duty and liberation.
Written by Sage Ved Vyasa, the epic Mahabharat is the story of the Kuru clan. The epic chronicles their struggle for the throne of Hastinapur.
The evil Kauravas and the righteous Pandavas of the Kuru clan go to war, which finally culminates into the fierce battle of Kurukshetra. The story revolves around complex conflicts, relationships, hatred, deceit and the ultimate win of bad over evil.
Mahabharat also records the life of Lord Krishna from his childhood days in Gokul to his advice in the form of Bhagvad Gita to Arjun.
