Vidur tells Dhritarashtra that he is the past and the past must always make way for the present to flourish. He says even Gandhari and Kunti have decided to give up Hastinapur and move to the forest with him. Dhritarashtra does not have to courage to face either Kunti or Gandhari but Vidur says that like Dhritarashtra, even they are standing on the opposite sides of the battlefield with their share of corpses and their presence will remind him of the unjust way he treated Hastinapur.

The Pandavas and Krishna arrive at the palace to seek Dhritarashtra's blessings. Krishna is the first to greet Dhritarashtra but refuses to mourn for his sons by saying that his sons had themselves chosen the path that led to their death. Krishna once again reminds Dhritarashtra that history will forever hold him responsible for the war. Dhritarashtra justifies himself and says he was merely doing what any king is supposed to do, protect his kingdom and hand over the throne to his son, and like a king, he will give up his throne to the man who defeated him.

Yudhishthir is the next to greet Dhritarashtra. He asks Bheem to come and meet him but Krishna stops Bheem and tells him to bring forward a statue instead. The Pandavas do not understand this, but Krishna's intention is revealed when Dhritarashtra crushes Bheem's statue in his arms under the pretext of hugging him.

However Dhritarashtra is heartbroken after committing this act and is relieved when he realizes that he crushed Bheem's statue and not him. Krishna says he knew Dhritarashtra's anger over losing his son had not subsided and his anger would have made him commit an act he did not want to.
