Arjun refuses to allow Bhishma to give up his body, but Bhishma tells him that he has to go since he has paid all his debts. Bhishma says he realized extremely late that he was wrong in taking care of only the king of Hastinapur and not Hastinapur. He says every hardship the Pandavas went through, he was directly or indirectly responsible for each of them and Arjun was right in punishing him for it.
Bhishma tells the Pandava that he is guilty of arrogance since he became a slave of an oath he had taken. He instructs the Pandavas never to take an oath that can stop them from fulfilling their duty towards their country.
Bhishma tells them that a king cannot afford to blame his mistakes on his past as that would make him a very bad administrator. He asks the Pandavas to make sure they do not have anything in their mind that will stop them or else their fate will not be different from Bhishma's.
He tells the Pandavas to make sure they treat women with the utmost amount of respect and never stray from their path of duty. He proclaims that a country or a kingdom can never be divided because that always leads to destruction and they must strive to make sure that Hastinapur always stays united.
Bhishma asks Arjun to rub the dust of his motherland on his forehead, but Krishna does it for him instead. Bhishma prays to God as he makes his final wish of leaving his body. The Gods in heaven shower flowers on Bhishma's body as his soul leaves the earth to go to heaven.
